Jumpstart Fashion Show 2017

Friday: October 13th, 2017.
Happy Friday The 13th!

A week ago my school held our annual yearly jumpstart event. It was Tuesday October 3rd.

Moore College of Art & Design: "For the past 25 years, students in Moore’s BFA Fashion Design program have been charged with conceptualizing, designing and constructing garments for the fall fashion show within three weeks. This year’s inspiration celebrates #Parkway100. Select looks are now on display at Century 21 Department Store."

Sophomores usually complete an accessory of some sort, this year it was headpiece/neckpiece. The idea was to take the industrial felt and turn it into something more based off the parkway.

How I designed my product for jumpstart? My product inspiration started from the Philadelphia free public library. I went out and took a bunch of photos on the parkway. The library structure was most interesting to me. I liked the look of the window frames and how they had this ridge look to them like a ruffle. It was the arch. Every time I tried to replicate an arch, I ended up with a ruffle. And that is what inspired me to play with ruffles and turn it into a neck piece. But it's a multi story building. I didn't want to do just one ruffle and have nothing else. So I just kept continuing. I looked at so many old photos and saw so many events that were placed there and different things. I looked up DII ruffle collars and reminded me of old Victorian times and clowns. And I played with how ruffles were made. The beginning idea was a simple ruffle some tulle, Halloween webbing cloth and then I started to add on these stringy felt pieces. I used zip ties to hold the stringy pieces as well as hot glue. It pulled together with a ribbon. The ruffles were so thick with the felt I had to even use gorilla glue to keep it together. And even when I tried to sew it the needle kept getting loss in the felt because it was way to thick. After that I added more to my piece. It was too plain. I used more cloth, more stringy felts and even a double ruffle. I got rid of the ribbon fasten and made a Velcro strap neck collar to pull it on and off. It was more wearable at this point. So I had a vintage looking ruffle neck piece by my final product. At the beginning I ended up as a semi finalist at jumpstart and soon won for “Most Experimental.” At the end of the show when they called awards for each grade and winning was a shock but it was a great feeling. It was an honor since I ended up in urgent care with an allergic reaction to the material. Also some hot glue burns on my skin. But it was worth it. Now my piece sits in the Century 21 window. It is in Century 21 for now and then will be in the galleries.
