Style Careers
Friday: December 20th, 2016.
As you may or may not know, I leave for Greece this Sunday, but before I go i'll be updating yet again before the New Year! And definitely updating about my Greece trip when i'm back, and maybe during it! But for todays post, i've talked about it before how i'm apart of teen vogue and parsons online fashion certificate program. For this program I got an assignment to post on my blog about fashion careers, with websites for employment and how to fix yourself to fit the roll.
The Prompt:
This is a good point in the program to start looking at fashion industry internship and job listings to see what sorts of skills hiring managers are looking for. Start at the Style Careers and Fashion Internships websites, for example. Locate opportunities that look interesting, and note the skills you would need to be a good candidate for the position. To complete this activity: On your own social media (blog etc.) create a post in which you 1) describe an interesting job listing that you’ve found, 2) name one new skill that you would need to develop to be successful at this job, and 3) describe a brief plan for how you are going to acquire that skill. As you continue through this program, make this skill development work a priority — we are going to ask you to look at your progress later on!

My Answer:
I found an interesting job on Style Career. It was an ad to be a designer for children's sleepwear. Everyone who knows me knows i'm in school for fashion design, interested in all types of clothing and fashion. The ad is for Cloud nine clothing.

Job Description:
DESIGNER - Children's Sleepwear
DESIGNER - Children's Sleepwear
It's that time again. We are growing. Cloud Nine Clothing LLC is
located in midtown Manhattan designing children’s sleepwear. We
are seeking an experienced designer with good fashion sense that
will be able to recognize new trends and adapt them to our
market. The name of the brand is Sleep On It. Look on our
website to view the list of retailers that sell it. You will
also see the logo.
We are a happy and creative team looking for someone that is
like minded to help us grow. This is a hands-on design position.
The successful candidate should be able to manage the entire
design process starting from the inception through approval of
shipment samples. You will be working closely with the Sales,
Technical and Production Departments to develop fashion product
lines. You must be able to design and develop all products,
create the tech packs, artwork, and trims and handle the entire
approval process.
Requirements:
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in designing children’s
sportswear and/or sleepwear for the budget market
- A profound knowledge of all Apple MAC programs used for design
(Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.) Knowledge of File Maker Pro
or AMT is a plus
- Must be able to design and create graphics and prints
- Strong understanding of garment construction, sewing, and
printing techniques
- Great time management skills; the ability to be organized and
prioritize in order to respect the deadlines
- The ability to multi-task in this fast paced environment
- Excellent communication and organizational skills; must
provide attention to the details
- Bachelor’s Degree in Fashion design or related field
I had to pick one skill on how to be able to get this job. Besides the fact I have not worked in the industry for children's clothing for 5 years nor do I have a Bachelor's Degree in Fashion Design. The skill I chose to work on is knowledge of all Mac adobe programs, since that is what I'm working on in class. I took Design 1 last semester and now Design 2 this semester. I've used adobe photoshop and illustrator and premier. I am no pro, but learning how to get better at all these programs, and that is the skill I will be accessing through this to make myself able to complete this job. I'm a creative young aspiring designer in college and my skills are coming as I get further and further and this is these are the skills I will be working on. A well knowledge of mac adobe programs to become a better designer. That is how I would be a good candidate for this position.
The point of this was a prompt on how to apply for a job, what skills you need, how to apply yourself to the skills, what to work on, to build your resume to apply for a job. And included resources on where to look for a job in the fashion industry.
